The Greater Mackenzie Mountains captures much of the Yukon and Northwest Territories portions of the Y2Y region. It is an area that is sparsely populated by people and contains some of the largest tracts of wilderness left in North America. Wide-ranging caribou herds still roam here along with abundant populations of moose, grizzlies, wolves and wolverines. Large, intact landscapes like this are becoming increasingly important in an era of climate change where species will need to shift their ranges in order to survive. Despite all these attributes not much of this region is protected. Pressures to extract oil, gas and mineral resources increase with each year.
Y2Y is a major Canadian-U.S. collaborative of over 450 conservation organizations, researchers, agencies, individuals, and other groups working to connect and protect habitat from Yellowstone to Yukon so people and nature can thrive.
